Like any final act, it contains complications and consequences, followed by the urgency of crossing the finish line. And like its predecessors, the album ends with a happy ending in C major, but the road is punctuated by more dissonance, tension and ambiguity.<\/p>\n
Solo Piano I (2004) was released in a more innocent time, when Chilly Gonzales was a pioneer in evoking the declining classical and jazz genres, dragging them kicking and screaming into the 21st century. This album of accidental virtuosity surprised everyone, including the self-proclaimed musical genius.<\/p>\n
Solo Piano II (2012) appeared as a small pop masterpiece for a connected world, a transition to a new reality. Having become a legendary showman and collaborator of renowned and esteemed artists (Drake, Daft Punk, Feist), Chilly Gonzales unveiled a collection of catchy, refined pieces designed to please, showing he was ready for prime time.
This second opus certainly satisfied a growing audience, ever hungrier for Gonzo\u2019s imperfectly perfect miniatures.<\/p>\n
Solo Piano III emerges at a more problematic turning point.<\/p>\n
The collaborations continue (Room 29 with Jarvis Cocker, Ibeyi, Toddla T...) but Chilly Gonzales is no longer trying to please. Now he leaves in the wrong notes. The mysterious chords and singular structures become addictive and end up resonating inescapably. The first edition of the Gonzervatory, an ephemeral music school, has just ended and the teacher has become once again the student he has always been and always will be, unafraid to let the music speak for itself.<\/p>\n
The musical purity of Solo Piano III is not an antidote to our times; it reflects all the beauty and ugliness that surrounds us.<\/p>\n
This songbook brings together a selection of 9 pieces from the album, faithfully transcribed. For many, these transcriptions will reveal a fine musical mechanism that is often deceptive or even invisible to the ear. Editing them required making choices, the first being to offer pianists scores that are as comfortable as possible.<\/p>\n
