Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Ah vous dirai-je, Maman K. 265The Anacrouse collection offers pianists, beginners and advanced alike, a wide choice of classical works from the Renaissance to the present day. It brings together major works of the repertoire as well as rarer pieces, and also offers transcriptions for piano solo or four hands, selected for their musical and educational interest. Each score, available individually, benefits from careful editorial work: a rigorously established musical text, clear and legible engraving, accompanied by a short biography of the composer and a note on the work.
The “Variations on ‘Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman’” (K. 265) are an excellent field of exploration for the pianist. The technical work varies from one variation to the next: speed of scale passages, mastery of arpeggios, hand-crossing, or work on expression in the slow minor-key variation. The main challenge lies in clarity of articulation and rhythmic regularity, hallmarks of the Mozartian style. Here the student can exercise the ability to preserve the simplicity of the theme while tackling increasingly elaborate finger difficulties.
Composed around 1781-1782 during a stay in Vienna, these twelve variations are based on a popular French song of the time, which was not yet the lullaby we know today but a pastoral romance. Mozart (1756-1791) appropriates this naive melody to make it a demonstration of his inventive genius. Through these pages, he transforms a childlike tune into a brilliant, witty concert work, proving that in his hands the simplest material can attain universal elegance and depth.
