Claude Debussy
Goliwogg’s Cake-WalkThe Anacrouse collection offers pianists, beginners and advanced alike, a wide choice of classical works from the Renaissance to the present day. It brings together major works of the repertoire as well as rarer pieces, and also offers transcriptions for piano solo or four hands, selected for their musical and educational interest. Each score, available individually, benefits from careful editorial work: a rigorously established musical text, clear and legible engraving, accompanied by a short biography of the composer and a note on the work.
“Golliwogg’s Cake-Walk” in E flat major is the final piece of the Children’s Corner suite. For the pianist, it represents a thrilling rhythmic challenge, combining classical rigour with the emerging influence of American ragtime. The pedagogical work focuses on mastering syncopation, the precision of the left-hand leaps and the very nervous articulation of the main theme. The central section, slower and mocking, calls for great expressive suppleness and a sense of irony to underline the sudden dynamic contrasts.
Composed between 1906 and 1908 for his daughter Chouchou, this work bears witness to Debussy’s curiosity about the popular music of his time. The “cake-walk” was an African-American dance very much in vogue at the beginning of the 20th century. Mischievously, Debussy inserts a parody of the famous prelude to Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, interrupted by bursts of musical laughter. It is a page of dazzling modernity, where French elegance meets the energy of the New World with biting irony.
