Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Flight of the BumblebeeThe Anacrouse collection offers pianists, beginners and advanced alike, a wide choice of classical works from the Renaissance to the present day. It brings together major works of the repertoire as well as rarer pieces, and also offers transcriptions for piano solo or four hands, selected for their musical and educational interest. Each score, available individually, benefits from careful editorial work: a rigorously established musical text, clear and legible engraving, accompanied by a short biography of the composer and a note on the work.
“Flight of the Bumblebee” in A minor is one of the most spectacular and feared pages of the piano repertoire. This transcription is an exceptional technical challenge, centred on chromatic velocity and lightness of touch. For the pianist, the aim is to maintain a perfectly even, uninterrupted flow of semiquavers, demanding total wrist suppleness and great finger precision to suggest the insect’s incessant buzzing.
Originally conceived as an orchestral interlude for the opera “The Tale of Tsar Saltan” (1900), this piece imitates the darting flight of a prince transformed into a bumblebee to reach his father. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s genius lies in the use of rapid chromatic scales which, beyond mere technical prowess, create a true sound picture. Having become a universal showpiece, it has been the subject of many transcriptions, including this one, which conveys all the energy and nervousness of the original.
