Johannes Brahms
Waltz Opus 39 No. 3The Anacrouse collection offers pianists, beginners and advanced alike, a wide choice of classical works from the Renaissance to the present day. It brings together major works of the repertoire as well as rarer pieces, and also offers transcriptions for piano solo or four hands, selected for their musical and educational interest. Each score, available individually, benefits from careful editorial work: a rigorously established musical text, clear and legible engraving, accompanied by a short biography of the composer and a note on the work.
Johannes Brahms’s “Waltz in G sharp minor, Op. 39 No. 3” stands out for its melancholy atmosphere and discreet elegance. From a pedagogical point of view, it is an excellent exercise for right-hand articulation over a sober, regular waltz rhythm. Its unusual key also gives the pianist the opportunity to become familiar with double sharps and to explore the muted shades of the keyboard.
This score offers one of the most intimate pages of the sixteen waltzes composed in 1865. Unlike its more brilliant sisters, this third waltz evokes the nostalgia of the Central European folk music that Brahms loved so much. Although originally conceived for four hands, this solo piano version perfectly conveys all the harmonic finesse and emotional depth of the German master.
