Franz Schubert
Scherzo D.593The Anacrouse collection offers pianists, beginners and advanced alike, a wide choice of classical works from the Renaissance to the present day. It brings together major works of the repertoire as well as rarer pieces, and also offers transcriptions for piano solo or four hands, selected for their musical and educational interest. Each score, available individually, benefits from careful editorial work: a rigorously established musical text, clear and legible engraving, accompanied by a short biography of the composer and a note on the work.
The “Scherzo in B flat major” (D.593) is an ideal piece for working on lightness and articulation. The challenge for the pianist lies in the precision of the ornaments (appoggiaturas) and the play of contrasts between the legato sections and the more bouncing passages. The central “Trio” calls for a more singing, calm approach, offering an excellent exercise in melodic shaping. It is a work which, beneath its apparent simplicity, demands great elegance of touch to convey its lively, mischievous character.
Composed in 1817, the two Scherzos D.593 by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) mark an important stage in his piano writing. While the first, in B flat major, sometimes recalls the spirit of Haydn or Mozart, it already bears Schubert’s unique melodic stamp. At a time when the composer was exploring the great sonata forms, these little pieces bear witness to his genius for the musical miniature. Over time, this scherzo has become one of the pages most appreciated by young pianists for its freshness and springtime clarity.
